Play.com Review

Anglo-Swedish indie rock outfit Razorlight return with their long-awaited third album Slipway Fires. Dynamic and epic in its expressions, Slipway Fires sees lead singer Johnny Borrell and his talented bandmates incorporate a raw, edgier rock dynamic to their already recognisable and acclaimed sound.

After releasing two of the most popular indie albums of the last five years with their debut Up All Night and 2006's self-titled release, Razorlight have achieved an acclaimed status as one of the key bands within the Indie music scene today. With high standards to live up to, Razorlight have kept everyone eagerly awaiting their third album Slipway Fires. The two year period between the previous album and this new release has seen Razorlight undergo a period of isolation and creative rest. Travelling to the Inner Hebrides in search of inspiration, the band have documented their renewed creative process with a collection of songs that are stripped down to basics and show raw emotion.

Opening with the Top 5 hit 'Wire to Wire', Slipway Fires sees a continuation on spiritual themes throughout. Taking great influence from a torrent of acclaimed artists from Bob Dylan to Arcade Fire, Slipway Fires is an anthemic collection of soulful hits that showcase Razorlight's accomplished song-writing ability.

I am a fan of razorlights work since their first album, but after reading the reviews on the current album i seriously considered not purchasing it. However, that would have been a huge mistake. This album shows how far razorlight have come over the years. I believe the critisism aimed at razorlight is as a result of the image of johnny borrel. He may not be the most likeable person, but he knows how to write a fantastic song, and that should not be taken away from him. I have heard people say that they are not recognisable from their punchy indie pop sound of the first album, however these are the same people who would critisize them if they had kept this sound for not developing their music. This album perfectly encompasses great songs, with great tunes. My personal favourite being hostage of love. This album is a must buy for any genuine music lover.

Razorlights most mature album yet and it's great!

I'm sure that most of Razorlight fans will enjoy the Slipway Fires album alot but, some of the younger fans might find it to laid back or not rocky enough. Razorlights lyrics are very impressive overall on this album and there are many fantastic tunes on display here too. I have listened to the Slipway Fires cd alot and at the moment my favourite tracks are as follows: Wire To Wire, You And The Rest, 60 Thompson, Stinger and Monster Boots. That could change as most of the songs are excellent and there is just the one small filler really.
Overall Slipway Fires has the potential to make Razorlight massive like Coldplay or Radiohead it's that good.

 Great! Give it a chance"!

Great Album. I think many people on here haven't given this album enough chance. The album does focus more on lyrics and vocals instead of previous rock tunes, but that doesn't make it worse in my opinion that makes it much better!
Standout tracks are: Wire to Wire, Hostage Of Love, 60 Thompson and The House. Whatever anyone says if you like razorlight you should love this.

 Its O.K

This album is quite dissapointing, i really like razorlight but after listening to this i feel a bit dissapointed by it, there are some great songs, hostage of love and tabloid lover but it just seems dissapointing.

Top 10 Tickets Reviewer

I hated "wire to wire" at first, it grew on me, i quite liked the album on first listen, but it hasn't grown on me.

It is nothing on "up all night", any trace of intelligence is gone and it is lacking in honesty or passion, but traces of tunes remain.
"Wire to wire" is a risky lead single but it is a great track, especially considering it really shouldn't work! "Tabloid lover" is a good track but lyrical cracks begin to show, "north london trash" ia again, not a bad song, but the lyrics are disastrous. ("Hot bodied girlfriend" ahh! As bad as "i want crisps") "stinger", "the house" and "60 thompson" are alright but these guys (or guy, depending on your view of borrell's in band politics) just take themselves far too seriosly, the lyrics on "blood for wild blood" are ridiculous and irratating, so cheesy, so god damn (i'll say it again) ridiculous.

If you loved "razorlight" you will find something for you in this, you may fall for it completely and learn every word, but if, like me, you naively hoped for a return to "up all night" roots or at least not go to far ('cause razorlight had some tuuuunes on it) then you will be dissapointed, or maybe you'll find it funny and listen to it until flight of the choncords release another album.
