Play.com Review
Alternative rock giants, Coldplay, return to increase their global success with their fourth studio album, Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. Investing the same hunger that has gained them multi-million album sales worldwide, Coldplay arrive back on the music scene with a host of new world tracks that emit charm and make up their most experimental record to date.
Since the release of their Mercury Prize nominated debut, Parachutes, Coldplay have dominated the charts with their soft rock. By sticking to a similar formula with all of their albums, from their acclaimed debut through to 2005's X&Y, Coldplay have constructed one of most recognisable sounds of the British music scene today. Viva La Vida, however, sees the band develop their style further to experiment with creative elements. The opening track is 'Life In Technicolor', a world-pop delight that in a mix of layered chiming and escalating beats erupts into the gothic 'Cemeteries Of London'. While the church organ led 'Lost!' ups the tempo with hand clapping and funky beats, the piano tinkling and strained vocals of Chris Martin on '42' sees Coldplay return to their established formula with a track that resembles their Top 10 hit 'Trouble'. As the catchy piano hook and guitar edge of 'Violet Hill' outlines a political message, the combination of slashing chords and violin bursts on tracks such as 'Viva La Vida' demonstrate fully the inspiration that the band have taken from cultural and musical influences to bring together this eclectic album.
Touching on different style elements, Viva La Vida is Coldplay's grown up album. By taking a new direction musically Coldplay have created a record that contains not only all of the sturdy melodies and universal themes that their fans have come to expect but adds interesting soundscapes to intrigue those less familiar with their enchanting music.
