Play.com Review

Worldwide superstar Kanye West returns in glorious style for his fourth studio album 808s and Heartbreak. Stretching the boundaries of modern day hip-hop, Kanye West sets pulses racing with a pop-influenced album that replaces the trademark neon boasts and sample-rich compositions of his previous releases with a raw treatise on the nature of heartbreak and loss.

The evolution that escalated between his first and last album, rap heavy 'The College Dropout' and the electro inspired 'Graduation', confirmed Kanye West as a true master of reinvention. 808s and Heartbreak is the next episode in the ever changing style of Kanye West and marks his biggest change in direction to date. Shaping the soundtrack to his life with a combination of the classic Roland TR-808 drum-machine and a vocal distorting auto-tune vocoder, Kanye West projects his tales of pain and loss. The death of his mother and break-up with his fiancee last year have unlocked a catalogue of emotion filled lyrics. The swooning 'Welcome to Heartbreak' is a dark track with a unique arrangement: long periods of instrumental breaks enhance the vocals and emphasise Kanye West's songwriting skills. The mechanical grind of his vocals on 'RoboCop' and first single 'Love Lockdown' have a deep effect on the senses as he reflects on his dwindling relationship. While the broken beats of 'Street Lights' and 'Heartless' offer emotional openness, the Lil Wayne collaboration 'See You In My Nightmares' is a synth-string laden epic in which Kanye West reverts back to rapping for the only time on the album.

808s and Heartbreak is a bold and brave progression for Kanye West. Replacing the quirky rap humour of previous releases with a series of stripped-down tracks, Kanye West has removed himself from his comfort zone and left himself emotionally exposed. With 808s and Heartbreak's unique concept, Kanye West has created an album that is as endearing as it is daring.

 Pretty damn good.

This is a new avenue for Kanye West and, personally, i really like it.
I think the slightly more poppy market has been the way to go for kanye. I did love his old albums but to hear him sing brings a new perspective to his music.

 'its amazing'

After been a fan of kanye's rap style for a while now. having all 3 albums previous and still loving them, this 4th album came as a shock. Love lockdown did not impress me as a single release but i believed in kanye, i bought the album and on first listen i had 2 questions... Why so much auto tune, and what happened to the rap. overall my first listen wasn't good. without realising though, i found myself singing a couple of tunes from it, so decided to go at it again. since then i have been addicted. it is a truley amazing album, it makes me wonder how i want his next album to sound.
this is in my opinion the best album of 2008.

 Good. Not Great.

The first half of the album I think over powers the second, even though the album is brilliant, I kinda lose interest in the second half. So for arguments sake I'm gonna review the half of the album I've listened to! Of course "Love Lockdown" is a brilliant song with a dark edge to it. Kanye has successfully combined space, R&B, D&B, tribal and Techno altogether into one collaboration, which gives the songs a dark, eery, almost empty feel to it..which sends a chill to the listener. I recommend this album to any Kanye fan or any R&B lover. Worth 4 stars!

well worth a download ermm...... i mean purchase

First of all ive only decided not to give this album 5 stars because im such of fan of college dropout and graduation and this in my opinion isnt better then either, at first listen i was dissappointed as it didnt really sound like a kanye west album and seemed like he's went for the over imitated akon, ne-yo sort of stuff which i think is ok at times but a bit annoying in a whole, but once ive listened to it through a few times ive really changed my opinion this really is an awesome album with a lot catchy tracks which is far superior to what the hip hop genre has been rolling out for the best part of 2008

 VERY DIFFERENT!!

Ok...i c a lot of da criticism about this album, and i hav 2 agree, this is not even close to kanye's previous material. 808's will not be considered one of his best compared to the likes of Late Registration and Love Lockdown does'nt come close to Gold Digger, Through the Wire or Good Life.

But this is what we have...if this was not Kanye West's album, most people would be raving about a new refreshing sound, but because of his previously briliant lyrical genius, his change of direction has upset many, including myself. But, its still a good album.

Heavy bass, crazy sounds and thought provoking lyrics, along with some high profile colaborations. Its jus what kanye does, except this time, its done in disguise. Whilst i found myself critical at first, after a few listens u begin to feel the raw emotion come thru, and it quikly becomes sumthin u can not escape from. Without doubt best tracks are love lockdown, heartless and the song wiv young jeezy. Giv sum appreciation to the album.....listen more than oncde b4 settling on an opinion.
