Play.com Review

Gritty indie-rockers Howling Bells have arrived in fabulous form with their second studio album, Radio Wars. Little less than three years since the release of their hauntingly beautiful and critically acclaimed self-titled debut, the Australian foursome have returned to kick up a storm with this sultry and sophisticated release. From the opening bars of 'Treasure Hunt' Radio Wars kicks off with a barrage of bass heavy melodies and gargantuan guitar riffs that erupt and strike with biting venom under clean and open soundscapes. Adding blissful contradictory tones to the pounding beats, lead singer Juanita Stein laces her distorted PJ Harvey-esque vocals with dreamy accuracy to give a sweet yet sour slant to the swampy epics of 'Lets Be Kids' and 'Cities Burning Down'. Overall Radio Wars has an increasingly slicker sound than that of their darker debut. The precise production of tracks such as 'It Aint You' and single 'Into The Chaos' has unleashed a brighter retro side to Howling Bells rough guitar rock style that bares resemblance to both '90s pioneers The Breeders and alternative giants R.E.M. By confidently experimenting with different techniques Howling Bells have delivered an accomplished album that will have established fans and those less familiar immediately hooked with its expansive indie-pop treasures.

Brilliant again - but much lighter

I've been fortunate enough to get hold of a preview copy and it doesn't disappoint - a much, much lighter feel to the first and with less shoe-gazing - but after a couple of listens it begins to make sense. The only downside is that it's over way too soon so I'll be buying the double CD version when it comes out. Okay, not as good as the first one but how do you surpass perfection?

Their sophomore album is a must-buy for HB fans!

Their first album was stunning, simply put. Radio wars, while very good, isn't AS good as their debut album.

The problem for me is that there aren't that many classics. Well, the first two songs, Treasure Hunt and Cities Burning, are up there with Howling Bell's best, but the remainder take a while to stay with you.

It's certainly an album that requires a few listens, but it's still carries that quality Howling Bells sound. Treasure Hunt is my fave from the album, it's a cracking tune.

My least favourite would be Golden Web - I get what they tried to do, but it doesn't work. It starts off well, but the Chorus lets it down.

Nightingale is probably the most haunting of the bunch and it works all the better cos of it. It's something you'd expect in a Tim Burton film.

Into the chaos has a great beat, it's dancier than you'd usually expect, groovy.

The album's last song is a bit of a downer. It's good, but not great, and certainly one of the weaker ones of the album.

When I say weak, I mean in terms of Howling Bell standards. They are still much better tunes than most other bands can work up.

     Great album

Great album - quoted as being "commercial" - but why not? - great songs and better than most material out there!
