Play.com Review

American pop-rockers Fall Out Boy make a rapturous return with their fifth full-length studio album, Folie a Deux. Containing only traces of the commercial punk sensibility that laced their previous release, Infinity on High, this roaring release sees Fall Out Boy develop a new rock sound that is brimming with '80s inspired riffs and contagious choruses.

Folie a Deux leaps joyfully between a blend of pleasing pop punk to grandiose epics. Delving deep in to the politics of the heart and mind, Pete Wentz takes the songwriting reigns to explore decaying relationships and societal shortcomings with lyrics that command the presence of lead singer Patrick Stump's distinctive vocals. While 'American Suitehearts' is a strutting tongue in cheek pop swipe at narcissism that bares resemblance to their catchy early hit, 'Sugar, We're Goin Down', the opening stomper 'Disloyal Order Of Water Buffaloes' is a crazed rock chant that is grand in proportion. With suave precision, 'Tiffany Blews' throws itself entirely into '80s new romanticism. It is a pseudo club track that sees one of rap's hottest stars, Lil Wayne, offering guest vocals. Folie a Deux is littered with star collaborations: while Blondie superstar Debbie Harry offers vocals on the sleek 'West Coast Smoker' and Pharrell Williams lends his expertise on the double-bass filled 'w.a.m.s.', the overblown piano ballad, 'What A Catch, Donnie', has guest appearances from Panic At The Disco frontman Brendon Urie and Gym Class Heroes' Travis McCoy alongside rock veteran Elvis Costello who sings the re-emerging hook from earlier track, 'Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet'. The upbeat tracks of 'She's My Winona' and '27' strut with experimental rock sounds: drummer Andrew Hurley pounds out taut marching beats, Joseph Trohman laces the tracks with lush guitarwork to construct Fall Out Boy's unmistakable sound.

Fall Out Boy have always shown a willingness to be creative and experiment in order to expand their sound to achieve greater results and Folie a Deux sees them take their largest risk yet. Introducing a wider range of sounds and instrumentation including orchestral and choral arrangements, Fall Out Boy have removed some of the standard punk elements of previous releases to produce their brightest and stylistically mature album to date.

The song titles may make about as much sense as learning algebra with Japanese fridge instructions, but what is clear is that this band spend longer than most writing and crafting their material.

Every song feels as though it was deliberated over carefuly; Fall Out Boy don't do padding - if it's on the album then it needs to be up to standard. There are of course the stand-out tracks, chief among them the first single, America's Suitehearts, but I guarantee that almost every fan will argue the case for a different song, such is the variety on offer.

One or two tracks might be a bit too obscure for casual tastes and not the sort of thing you sing along to, even if the tune is infectious, but FOB do not even try to appease everybody and they are a better band for it.

So we have 13 lively, distinctive, well-written, if occasionally curious tunes, each one deserving of your time. To round things off, the UK disc even features their cover of Michael Jackson's Beat It - if you don't enjoy that then you have no business owning ears.

At £6, you really have no excuse not to invest.

 One Word..... Fantastic

Right to start off with i wasnt a big fob fan. I did like infinity on a high and futct. I got this album as soon as it was released and i have to say i think its brilliant. Every track is brilliant and the songs get stuck in your head for ages! I would reccomend it to any fob fans and even people who dont know about fob and for around £6 (playtrade) its a bargain! You will not be dissapointed

 What do you want ?

OK.. Ive loved FOB since the early days. After there last disappointing album "Infinity on High" I wasn't expecting anything more than watered down commercialized pop rubbish. You know (not quite as bad Scouting for Girls) but you know what I mean. Folie A Deux isn't a brilliant album, but some tracks are ok, after hearing, I couldn't buy so before purchasing take a look on the FOB myspace page where you can listen to the album... =)

AWFUL !!! FOB HANG YOUR HEADS IN SHAME !!!

As a LONG - term FOB fan, I have to say that this album, Folie A Deux, is a DISASTER !!!

By far, FOBs worst album yet ! Where's the edge that the previous albums had ?! Why Pete ?! Why have you let Panic At The Disco affect the music so much ?! After this, I would be ashamed to admit to liking you FOB ! You should return to the days of Evening Out With Your Girlfriend and Take This To Your grave !!!

Because, this is a VERY poor effort, if that, at making a pathetic excuse for an album !!!

Shame on you FOB !!! For giving into commercialism !!! And abandoning your REAL fans !!! Not impressed FOB, not impressed !!!

Shame as well, because they were a good band, now, phhttt, I wouldn'r give them the time of day ...

As good if not better that Infinity on high
