Play.com Review

Led by singer-songwriter Florence Welch, Florence + The Machine burst into the public domain with their eclectic and refreshing debut album, Lungs. A confident mix of soul, rock and indie, the introduction to this London five-piece is an extraordinarily diverse long-player.

'Dog Days Are Over' is a gentle opening, with soft harp and delicate vocals, that gradually builds to a stompy, raucous crescendo. Cutting suddenly to a solitary, timid-sounding piano, the opening track is, in many ways, the perfect introduction to the talents of Florence And The Machine, and ideal preparation for the fascinating and complex musical journey that follows. A subtle tale of revenge, 'Girl With One Eye' is tinged with dark, cynical lyrics, but makes for a comfortable listen thanks to the big-budget studio production which is prominent throughout the album, whilst the frantic, dominating drums of 'Cosmic Love' are both exciting and unpredictable. 'Drumming Song' is wonderfully retro, experimenting with various percussion sounds, whereas 'Howl' finds Welch demonstrating the full range of her breathtaking vocal range. In the middle of all this excitement, 'Kiss With A Fist' is a welcome, traditional blues interlude. Yet, for all its adventure and pulsating theatrics, Lungs is very much a pop record: the exuberant 'Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)' and the catchy, self-deprecating 'Hurricane Drunk' are among the most rousing songs you'll hear this year. Closing with a laid-back, worthy cover of the Candi Staton classic, 'You've Got The Love', the album concludes on a positive, warm and soulful note.

With their first release, Florence + The Machine have successfully managed to create a collection of songs that offers both depth and excitement. Coupled with strings, choirs and flurrying piano, the imaginative songwriting ideals of Florence Welch are realised to their full potential. Before the release of this record, the band had already played numerous festivals (including Glastonbury and Reading), won a 2009 BRIT award in the 'Critics Choice' section and have taken part in the prestigious NME Awards Tour. The considerable hype, however, is worth believing, because Lungs is a breathtaking debut album.

Lungs is also available in a Special 2CD Deluxe Edition .

 Album of the year

This is a clear contender for album of the year. It's imaginative, thoughtful, emotional and mature all in one album. I thought that after hearing a couple of the singles, the album would be a let down, but it surprised me more than any other album in 2009. It is far better than I imagined; a visceral soundscape of creativy, which gets you bouncing in your seat - even to the slower songs. What I love about this album is that it's really unique. Although not entirely dissimilar to Bat for Lashes for example, this has more of an addictive quality to it. You'll want to listen to it again and again. My only criticism is that she released 'You've Got The Love' as a single. Don't get me wrong I like it and it's actually one of my favourite songs, but it's not the best version, and with so many other brilliant original songs on the labum, I felt it missed a trick and fell foul of corporate commercialisation. In my opinion, the singles released thus far are not the best songs on the album so there's so much more to discover.....so get to it!

Definately my favourite album of last year, and probably one of the most original. "Lungs" is the debut album from the very talented Florence Welch. Cracking songs, intelligent lyrics and a mish mash of pop, folk and a love of Kate Bush, makes this an essential purchase.
Singles include Dog Days are Over, Kiss With A Fist, Rabbit Heart, Drumming Song and the cover of You Got the Love. I kinda agree with the previous reviewer, that they're are even better songs on the album, like the beautiful and sweet Between Two Lungs and My Boy Builds Coffins.
She deserves all the praise that has been heaped on her! Superb!

 Just Go With The Flo

Absolutely Incredible - The most aptly titled album ever! Florence Welch has the most incredible set of lungs, and the range and power of her voice is simply stunning. Every track is different, every track is supurbly written and performed. There are NO average songs here, they're ALL total class.

Flo's vocals are something special and the band are very, very good. I dare anyone (except boy band fans) to say that this is not one of the best albums in the last 10-15 years. Get it, or regret it.

Im not usually 1 for writing reviews but felt this album deserved it!. If you like music that kick starts your imagination & takes you to a different place then you need this album in your life. From Florence's voice singing her mesmerizing lyris to the sound of the harp in the background, this album does take me another place. I have never heard music like it. It is quite simply unique!!
