Special Features

  • On An Island is the third David Gilmour solo album and his first studio recording since Pink Floyd's 1994 multi-platinum 'The Division Bell'. From the first moments of the sound collage that begins 'On An Island', you know it's a special experience that not only bears comparison with the best of Pink Floyd, but also confirms their lead guitarist and singer as an outstanding solo artist. Here he reveals a personal vision and a breadth of styles - folk, jazz, orchestral and rock - brought together as a unified piece by his lyrical guitar playing and instantly recognisable voice.
  • On An Island is a collection of songs and instrumentals that had its genus in the critically acclaimed 2002 London Festival Hall concerts. Gilmour has stepped out of his super-group to discover he's still at his peak - and he's rightly pleased. 'It's my best and most personal work,' he says. 'Making it with my musician friends has been a positive experience on so many levels.' And touring it this spring can only take him to a new high.

The music presented on this album is fantastic, lovely warm synths, some nice guitar, great gilmour vocals..... but it lacks something.... its got a very lonely feel, the music is there and your listening to it.... your never really absorbed in the music.... if you buy this album expecting the pink floyd sound, you will be disappointed, the music is very floydy..... but lacks the heart, soul and drive that floyd had.... its just not the same,
some tracks, like the title track "On an island" have a warm and soulful feeling, but the album as a whole lacks it.

I'd love to give this album 5 stars because its got some great songs, but you feel so isolated form the music..... when i listen to the album all the way through i only end up feeling cut off from the music.... as if im not ment to be listening to it, as if i've invited myself in....

Have to say i agree with wardini review. The album is good but its not got the staying par of any of the Floyd albums. The Division bell the last floyd album I would still play in preference to hearing on an island. There are no particular tracks that just jump out at you. I think David Gilmore is a great guitarist and also a great vocalist, its a shame that he seems to work better in a band with others contributing to the work as oposed to others playing on it, It is still the best solo effort, but if you were wanting to investigate Gilmore then a Division Bell is a better idea.
