there are many things to like about this album but it requires an 'active' listener to appreciate the quality of musicianship. there are certainly big singles "dani california" and "tell me baby" offering the immediacy that made earlier album, Californication, so popular but there is more to Stadium Arcadium than catchy, disposable hits. the biggest highlight is John Frusciante's lead guitar solos which are on another level - innovative, flowing and so passionate. he doesn't let up; this is truly the work of a world class guitarist. the overall tone of the album is similar to By the Way - a laid back, chilled out vibe. however, the ways in which the music transitions and progresses into unexpected territories makes the album interesting and unpredictable. it would be easy to criticise the album for being too long and including filler but if they left some songs off, obscure and unique numbers such as "wet sand" which i have grown to love, may not have made the cut. i agree though, it is not like the classic Blood Sugar.. or the much loved Californication with well-ordered, succinct selections of tracks so it will lose a star for this reason but then again, isn't that the beauty of having the 'skip' button on the cd player? much to explore on Stadium Arcadium, glad i bought it.
