Play.com Review

Moving away from the explorations of grief that categorised 2005's majestic Blinking Lights And Other Revelations into unrequited love, lust and desire, Hombre Lobo sees E taking the persona of 'The Dog-Faced Boy' from Souljacker, now grown up into a "dignified old werewolf".

The werewolf persona comes to the fore on Fresh Blood, where a thrumming, menacing bassline combines with E's howling and screaming, Hombre Lobo represents new territory for the band, and with a strong garage rock feel to this and other tracks, it shows that Eels are never afraid to switch things up. Beginner's Luck and My Timing Is Off both resemble 60's Californian pop-rock as much as anything, with jangling guitars sounding as upbeat as anything Eels have ever attempted. Lilac Breeze and Tremendous Dynamite both have powerfully distorted, rhythmic guitars strongly reminiscent of Link Wray.

Hombre Lobo is perhaps Eels most coherent album to date, with only the gentle All The Beautiful Things stepping away from the distorted blues-rock template to startling effect. This isn't to say that it is repetitive though, as the myriad influences evident on all tracks, as well as the high-energy, raucous sound ensure that Hombre Lobo is Eels at their very best.

Eels have, and will always remain one of my favourite acts. The honest sound of good ol' rock 'n' roll, grunge, blues and country mixed with slight touches of electronica have always been a powerful contrast to E's often tormented and dark lyrics.
In a life containing so much pain and grief, E has consistently produced outstanding music which must make him arguably one of the most celebrated songwriters of the last fifteen years.
With this latest release, you might say it has been split into two with touches of previous work which becomes obvious over both halves. By this I mean the first half is very much their 'Souljacker' and 'Shootenanny', and the second half is their 'Daisies' and 'Blinking Lights'. Although I don't think Hombro Lobo reaches those heights of some of his previous records, notably 'Electro Shock Blues' and Dasies Of The Galaxy', it's still a great album containing exactly what you would expect, and a bit more from E and his band.
In all Hombro Lobo remains another fine collection of songs, expertly produced, and put together by a dedicated musician/songwriter. It's just I wish I could give this five stars, but I need to be honest to myself here - it's close, but it isn't quite as good as some of their previous work. Still, please buy, you will not be disappointed

what a blast and five ***** again

and again E delivers a great album, this time a mix of rock 'n roll and noisy songs (resemblimg souljacker with a lot of distortio ) alternated with the more soft songs wich are E's patent. we must admit: this is an artist pur sang who should receive more attention and honour.
not a single album disappointed so far, although they are very different from each other and contain not the most easy themes and 'philosophies'. certainly not mainstream and far from commercial this band has built up a very convinced public for its music and concerts. not to be missed
respect for E and Eels.
