 A strange mix

Admittedly, have only listened to it once but it is mainly acoustic and the track Caspian Sea is absolutely terrible. The album is nowhere near as good as Happiness in Magazines or Love Travels At Illegal Speeds.

One of the best albums of 2009!

As others have stated..it takes a couple of listens to get into it but once you do, it is continually rewarding.

From the dreamy opener "Look Into The Light" to the melancholy "November", The Spinning Top charts a man's life from the cradle to the grave. Graham showcases his fingerpicking guitar style on most tracks and the production is sublime. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

 Early Coxon at his best

If you liked The Sky is Too High (Coxon's first solo effort) then you'll like this. Don't expect a similar sound to his last two LP's. Still, the Spinning Top holds it's own.

 Better after several listens

This album took several listens for me to get into it and then it clicked. Some of his best songs are on this like "If You Want Me" & "This House".

I do prefer "Happiness In Magazines" & "Love Travels At Illegal Speeds" but the more I hear this album the better it becomes, and also I know many people who feel the same.

 Different...but still good!

Contrary to the rather harsh one star review below, this is actually quite an accomplished effort from Graham Coxon. While I agree that track Caspian Sea is a little ambitious, the album still offers enough for Graham Coxon fans.
If you are expecting more songs in the same vein as those on Love Travels at Illegal Speeds and Happiness in Magazines, you'll be disappointed as Coxon goes in a different direction on this album.
He focuses on using finger plucking melodies as the main base of most of the songs here, and is as far away from tunes such as Freakin' Out and Standing On My Own Again as possible. To be able to pick up such a skill as complex as finger plucking (not something that is evident in his earlier works, or that of Blurs) and make it work is a credit to his talent.
What it does confirm to the listener is that Coxon is a master of the guitar, and one of the finest of his generation. A solid effort.
