An excellent album, showcasing an excellent mix between the classic styles of McCartney and the more psychedelic ways of Lennon. One of their best albums and remains excellent from start to finish.
This is sometimes overlooked as it was realesed as a double EP in this country (including I am the wallrus, fool on the hill )but in the USA they made a complete album with the singles of the time(Penny Lane, Strawberry fields, hello Goodbye, All you need is love). The music is great but I had hoped (as it appears nearly everyone else I have spoken too) that EMI would have finally sorted out that primative stereo of vocals on one side and instruments on the other, and guess what they have not. This is such a missed oppotunity and when I opend the stereo box set and put the first abum on my heart sank. With four years to re do the collection I hopped they at EMI would have finally agreed that as the stereo versions were secondary to the mono mixes it would be fine to revisit and correct this hard to listen to problem,John Lennon said in an interview that I still have "I can not understand why they put the vocals on one side and the instruments on the other". So if the musical genius himself said that I can not see what the problem is especailly in these days of headphones and i Playes is amazing they didn't. Oh well we may have to wait another 22 years for them to do this, golly I may not be around.
Upon first listen you don't notice much difference to the first CD release, but as you listen more closely you can pick out things much more easily than on the original CD's (such as a murmer of speach during the string introduction on 'All You Need Is Love', and bongos (?) throughout most of 'Penny Lane'.
Having not heard any of the other remasters I have nothing to compare this to (although I have a couple on order!), but they definately sound crisper and cleaner than before.
As for the stereo mixing of the vocals on one side and the drums etc. on the other, that was obviously the way things were done in 1967 and was how the Beatles wanted it to sound, I see no reason to change this for the new releases, after all they are remasters, not remixes.
Also there's an error on the disc label-under the track listing it says 'Let It Be Mini-Documentary', whilst it is in fact the correct one on the disc when you watch it on your PC! Apple/EMI are likely to correct this on future pressings, so get it now and it may be worth something in years to come!
A brilliant album with magical Mystery Tour I am the Walrus, Hello Goodbye, Strawberry fields Forever, Penny Lane and all you need is love. It's a amazing album. The fool on the hill and Baby your a rich man are also ok but a bit dissapinted with the rest. Still good album I think there best but don't mark me down for that. For those songs I don't like mark it down half a point which makes 4 and half byt I know this is harsh but I round down. Still a brillant album Buy it (and you ight like those other songs, but you will for a fact like the rest)
