To begin with, New Found Glory could be compared with any of the Pop-Punk clones that were spawned by bands Blink 182 and Green Day. However, on their 4th release, "Coming Home", they have proved themselves a band that will stand out and a force to be reckoned with in providing emotive punk powerpop.
Their are obvious changes in this sound, firstly, Vocalist Jordan Pundik's voice is deeper, more melodic and without the "over american whiny, tom delonge rip off" twang that kept him sounding about 12, whereas, on this record, he sounds closer to his age.
Another easily recognisable change is the introduction of session musician benmont tench's melodies on the hammond B3 and electric piano that work perfectly over the slightly more complex guitar parts which include more riffs than simple power chord progressions.
The other distinguishing element on this album is New Found Glory's focus on the POP over the punk, however, clearly avoiding any ties with the manufactured trash that is spawned from shows like "X Factor", they have imported alot of emotion into their songs, leaving behind the bratty pop-punk cliche subjects of girls, spots and summer.
If you havent been a fan of their earlier stuff, this may make you take another look at them, and fans of their earlier songs may or may not embrace their new sound with open arms. Some may even go as far as to class it as "Emo", and judging by NFG's recent touring with Paramore, this may an adequate argument. Even if they do say NFG has embraced "Emo", then this record is "Emo" done very well.
Personally, I think this album is a masterpeice, I love their earlier stuff too but this is by far my favourite record of theirs. I can see the connections to Emo bands and depending on your opinion of Emo, than that can be either good or bad, or perhaps non existent, as I'm aware not everyone will connect NFG to Emo.
Wether you like this new sound you cant help but agree this record is proof that NFG can grow up in the right way.
