If Not Now, When?

If you are looking for an Incubus album that sounds exactly the same as your previous favourite, you clearly don't understand Incubus' work. This album is as much of a departure from Light Grenades as A Crow... was from Morning View. Incubus have moved on, and if you haven't, it's certainly not the band's fault.

If you are looking for an album laden with melody, new sonic experiences and a new perspective on the world, presented in some incredibly catchy choruses, then give this an honest chance. Judge it based on itself rather than your preconceptions of what an Incubus album should be. Incubus have made an album that most will jump to say is "mature". I will reserve this judgement as I'm not entirely sure it is more mature than their previous albums. I will say that inspiration is clearly coming from a completely different place than it did in the late nineties, which I find refreshing and especially brave from a band whose fan's are constantly yearning for their alternative/funk metal days.

Although I would have only given it 3 stars upon first listen, the more I listen to it, the more the songs make complete sense as the next progression for Incubus. I feel like in a few weeks I'll regret not giving this 5.

only ever heard 1 song by this band about 5 years ago...that should have told me something straight away..why this album is in with the hard rock/metal is beyond me.my friend made me listen to it to try to get me to broaden my horizons a bit..big mistake.its quite simply dull and tedious.why bands make albums like this makes no sense.its as if all the band members wrote a ton of songs then on the day of recording decided to take a bottle of prozac each.its terminally bland and as such would suit people who like faux rock such as the red hot chilli peppers or such like..stick it with the easy listening section next to the carpenters.

I've been a fan of Incubus for a very long time and like the band my music taste has mellowed and expanded over the years.
This is truly a stunning album with deep melodic well written songs.
Stand out tracks on the first listen are Promises, Promises and Adolescents but after two listens the whole album is brilliant.
If you liked Light Grenades then you'll love this.

I fully agree with everything that Daniel Reid has written above on the first review & he is right don't bother picking this up if you want Incubus of old. But this is what I find fascinating...
Do Incubus fans actually listen to the lyrics??
The band actually challenge preconceived ideas, just like the release of this album, in life and thats what I find genius.
And it's a brave step for the band because this will split the room in half. It relies heavily on the listener to hear what the lyrics are about rather than trying to pull you into the mosh pit with a catchy hook.
To be honest I did actually think 'wtf' on the first listen - but there is the challenge... to challenge yourself & your ego, pretty much what the band are about. This album is heavy, but in a different context and fashion to what the metal crowd would presume, as it has certainly reignited my love of the band and their ability to not see any boundaries. Totally inspiring!!

I have been a huge Incubus fan for many years now and one thing I really have learnt to love about them is that with every new album, you can expect something new and different from the last. There is not much I can say other than this album has been beautifully written and it will shortly be joining the others on my CD rack. Highly recommended for those with open minds.
