I really wanted to give ths three and a half stars. It's certainly better than most bands' current output but doesn't stack up so well against Wilco's earlier work: not as 'leftfield' as A Ghost Is Born, not as soul-baring as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and not as country as AM or Being There. As an amalgam of these other albums' styles, it fails to be the sum of its parts.
That said, it's still a thoroughly enjoyable listen, especially the opening four tracks. Any newcomers to Jeff Tweedy's work should, however, start elsewhere.
