Many Mettalifans will state this is the album where Metallica 'changed' or more commonly 'sold out' but I dispute this.

Not worthy to 5 starts (you simply cannot compare this to their earlier work, in particular 'Kill em all' and the ground breaking 'Master of puppets') but this is a good album. A lot more mellow, but more haunting than any of it's predecessors, some of the lyrics are very dark (and perhaps reflect Hetfields recent loss of his father to cancer, in 'Until it sleeps in particlular). There are some great tracks, I love 'Hero of the day' and 'Kind nothing' but fans of the bands earlier work may be dissapointed with the lack of speed and 5 minute long guiar solos. Will also add that Newstead's bass work is fantastic, it's good that this album gave him the opportunity to showcase his talent.

Overall this is a good Metallica album which proves their versatility, and that they understand any sucsessful band must experiment and keep things fresh.
