The BlackBerry PlayBook is RIM"s answer to an explosion of interest in the tablet market. Designed to compliment the already impressive portfolio of BlackBerry devices, the Playbook is perfect for either large organisations or an army of one.

As is suggested by its name, the "PlayBook" offers a rich multimedia experience as well as strong business features. Competing with the likes of the Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab, the new tablet device from RIM is built to the high standard of professionalism that users expect of BlackBerry products.

So what"s special about the BlackBerry PlayBook? Firstly, it offers true multitasking, powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor. A new version of the Blackberry OS designed specifically for the tablet provides a slick interface and the ability to switch seamlessly between applications.

The newly designed OS can be enjoyed on the PlayBook's 7 inch LCD capacitive touchscreen, which aims to bridge the gap between mobile and "real web" browsing. Support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe mobile Air and HTML-5 helps to ensure pages are displayed as they would be on a traditional screen, providing a full browsing experience.

The multimedia feature set of the PlayBook is great for business and pleasure. Dual HD cameras for video capture and conferencing can both record HD video at the same time, while a microHDMI port enables media to be shared easily on external displays. Several forms of both audio and video playback are also supported.

Topping off the PlayBook's feature set is integration for BlackBerry Smartphones, as well as BlackBerry Enterprise integration out of the box. When connected over Bluetooth, smartphone content is viewable on the tablet and highly popular services such as BBM can also be used.

The PlayBook is locked in to RIM's programming too tightly - no Android Market / Google Play access and Bluetooth only works with other BlackBerry junk.

I bought one and wished that I hadn't!

I have the 64gb playbook and I rate it highly. Well constructed and works really smoothly. It is excellent for loading videos and playing them. They can be dragged and dropped from your pc and played without the need for an earpiece because the speakers are so good. The same for music. Wifi connectivity is excellent for emails, surfing the web etc and I regularly watch BBC TV and radio or listen to webcasts. The video camera is excellent, as is the regular camera. There is a reasonable collection of Blackberry compatible apps and a lot of the Android apps can be 'sideloaded' which is a very simple process explained on the Blackberry forums. The only reason I do not give this item 5 stars is because it is only 16GB. This does everything I want from a tablet and does it well.
