  Handsome drive but unreliable

| | See all mrmacao's reviews (1)

I was delighted when my drive arrived. It's start-up speed can be a little slow at times and it did seem to stall a little occassionally. Minor issues which should have suggested something was wrong. The drive has now died. 5 months into having it and it only being used a handfull of times. Unnacceptable for a back-up drive. Having read the reviews, it seems at least one other buyer has had the same problem. Is this what you expect of your back-up source? No, neither do I.

  PS3 compatible!

This comes ready and formatted as FAT32, which works perfectly with the PS3 to play movies off, my main reason for buying it. I use it with my laptop too to back it up. Usually you'll find that external hard drives are NTFS, but not this one.

With my item, the plug I received happened to be an EU one, not a British one, meaning I had to buy an adapter. I assume this is just a mistake and not common with the rest of them though.

The product itself is very sturdy and heavy. Not like other flimsy HDD's that I've had. The brushed grey finish is nice too.

The on/off switch is a great feature. It's nice to choose when to use it, rather than it being running constantly when plugged into the PS3 like my other HDD.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this item for any use whatsoever.

  Excellent Backup Drive

An excellent back up drive - it's quiet in operation and the 'gimmicky' brightness control allows you to tone down the activity light. Highly recommended !

Can't fault this hard drive at all - was a great price and have encountered no problems when connecting to any device. Highly recommended.

  Excellent drive - great price

I bought this drive to use with my WDTV and so far it's been great. Quiet, quick start up and doesn't run too hot (even in a cupboard). Looks-wise It's not what you'd call pretty but there is something cute about it's retro design.

The only slight negative would be the build quality - I doesn't feel overly solid, a little fragile even. But, saying that, it's not designed to be lugged around from place to place so for it's purpose it's perfectly adequate.

  Top piece of storage

| | See all Steevo's reviews (6)

I only needed a 1TB removable harddrive but got this instead. For the small increase in price comapred to 1TB ones it is well worth the extra 10-15 quid.

The unit is brushed aluminium which fits in well with my black pc. It takes about 10-15 seconds for windows to recognise once you have turned the unit on. A handy extra is its power switch on the front to save you having to unplug to save energy. The storage is brilliant for the price, I bought on recommendation that not many of the drives have failed. Mine has been fine so far, but only had it 2 months or so.

Software comes bundled on the drive, no seperate cd's. I cannot make up my mind whether it good or not. I did not like it at first but once i tried some others i saw that it wasnt too bad. Clutching at straws possibly but it cannot automatically backup files over 4gb. Two of my HD movies are larger than this so i have to do them manually. Even if all other files in the backup copy correctly it states the backup failed due to those files larger than 4GB not copying correctly.

Very happy with the drive itself. Plugs and plays without need to download software. Can be encrypted but havent tried this functionality yet. I use seperate software. It requires a power supply and has a white LED downlight with brightness control to stat whether it is on or off and in use. There is an autoplay .exe file on the drive to start with, I deleted this as i wanted to see it on explorer like any other drive, not just use the samsung software that came bundled. Transfer speeds writing to disk of 10-15M/s, transferred 334 GB to it and left on over night, no problems. took about 6 hours i think.

Absolutely great drive at an amazing price

I have previously purchased a number of external hardrives, most of which come from the seagate family. However this Samsung drive was a much better price for the amount of storage you get and has not disappointed me at all. The drive is quick to access and has stored all my data without a single problem. Its comes with some preloaded back up software which is nice if you need that sort of thing, and the added benefit of an on/off switch. This means you can not only save power, but also if your leaving it off for a long period of time you are protected from power surges without having to battle with finding the plug socket. It arrived formatted in FAT32 file system but a quick look on the internet found a nice official samsug formatting tool allowing quick conversion to NTFS. In short an amazing drive at an amazing price. Will almost certainly buy another one when I need more storage.
