 Gamers do not buy this

As soon as you plug in and connect to your ISP it does a firmware update and reboots, then the firewall settings dont work. EVERY port is permanently blocked except port 80, no matter if you setup a DMZ or not. Still waiting on response from Netgear support. If you want web suring and good parental controls then this router is great.

 Ideal router

Bought this to replace my clapped out old Belkin router, had it set-up and running the laptop, desktop and xbox 360 within 30 minutes of taking it out of the box. All the settings are clear and easy to follow and, while some of them may seem daunting to beginners, anyone with a basic understanding of how routers work will have no trouble with it.

Good all rounder hindered by wifi fault

UPDATE:I have left my previous review in place as the router worked well for me for quite some time however it has recently developed a fault were it has to be reset (turn off and on) every single time you want to connect wirelessly. I have done a large amount of research into this and it appears that the fault is widespread in this model and netgear have no solution. Therefore I have to now change my opinion of the router and recommend that you buy another item. as it is extremely frustrating to have to restart the thing everytime someone wants to use the laptop. very disappointing.

This is a simple to use and totally adequate router for home use and is a great replacement for my 5 year old router, adding wireless connectivity and built in switch meaning I don't need to have a separate 4 port 10/100 switch.

Almost didn't buy this thanks to the review below that states it automatically upgrades its firmware then locks all but one port. Pure nonsense or his was faulty, this does NOT happen. I have set up port forwarding for several things and it works exactly the same as previous netgear routers. (ie slightly confusing when you dont know how, simple once you work it out!)

This router is extremely easy to set up. The accompanying installation disk has an idiots guide that literally shows you what to take out of the box next and where to put it. The router then auto detects all settings and just gets on with it. The only info you need is your ISP login name and password.

The strength of signal, max wireless speed and number of wired sockets (4) is perfect for normal to heavy home use. The router is upstairs and my xbox 360 downstairs and I get strong unbroken signal.

I have 2 PCs connected via cable to the router. My wife can look at videos of fluffy cats and stream music from the web whilst I play online games at the same time. Its perfectly capable of handling all I can throw at it.

When got the product did not look like anything like it.
