First of all I'll get the good points out of the way first, the good points being that the drive is a Western Digital and always found them to be reliable for up to 10 years before they usually die quietly (based on experience with a WD 40GB Caviar Black IDE,)

The drive itself has more than enough storage for backing up data to like photos, music, videos and so on.

The bad points being down to the internal USB controller, for one I have found to be somewhat dodgy, which are:

When the hard drive is powered up, the USB controller sometimes takes too long to respond to the computer which Windows ends up giving in and classifies that the drive does not exist.

Also when the drive hard drive is powered up sometimes, the USB controller fails communicate to Windows properly in which Windows ends up classifying the drive as either unformatted/ doesn't have a MBR (Master Boot Record).

Sometimes when the USB controller puts the drive in to sleep mode and when the drive wakes back up and when you try to copy data to the drive, the controller the USB controller fails communicate to Windows properly in which makes Windows think the drive has gone bad which isn't the case.

Basically the bad points can be corrected by simply removing the USB plug, waiting until the drives LED light has blinked and gone off and then removing the power connector, then reconnect and the drive should function as normal again.

Overall though, I think Western Digital seriously needs to go back to the drawing board in regards to the controller chip they use, basically I can't recommend this drive to people until the flaws are addressed.

Only had the drive a few days, but i'm very happy with it. Good size for storage, fast transfer speeds and easy to setup.

I've had it only a week and had to restart the computer for something. When it reloaded it said that the hard drive wasn't formatted, costing me EVERYTHING on it and then wouldn't even reformat!

This piece of kit is fantastic. Impressive Transfer Speeds and shows a total size of 1.81TB when formatted as an NTFS (as it came). Plenty of room for backups or simply storage of media files.

This is ALSO a very sturdy External Hard Drive as I accidentally tripped over the power cable and the Hard Drive fell a considerable distance and crashed on the floor. Expecting the worst, I booted it up and it still seems to be working now! Only downside I can think of is the lack of a power switch but this is no biggie to me as you simply Safely Remove and pull the plug out the back.

Well packaged (drives will stack, for example). Connectors seem secure and drives work well connected to the USB port of my Netgear NAS. Guide price at Dec 2010, 75 GBP from reputable online sellers. Don't pay more and bear in mind that 3 and 4 TB 3.5" drives are just around the corner.

Recieved my WD drive on Sunday night at 21.20,so a big thanks to Play and Royal Mail for getting it to me in these weather conditions!
Firstly I am not techy in the least, this is a plug and go device and I had it up and running in minutes transfering thousands of music files onto the drive with no problems, its a doddle.I have free'd up loads of space on my laptop. One tiny wee niggle, the flashing indicator light is at the back of the drive with the cabling, why not on the blank front?Anyway that is minor, the drive plays the music back superbly via my laptop and Cambridge DacMagic.

Been looking at some large scale storage for a while, ive had a few drives from some other brands and not always had a good experience, got this drive for some Photo and Video stuff ive accumulated and very pleased. Nicely designed, solid, just does exactly what it says on the tin. Massive storage at a very good price. Can recommend.

Good quiet piece of tec - at a brilliant price - However watch the Power source as I dont trust the slide on plug fitting it has proven so
The power is intermittent so a new power plug had to be purchased
