I bought this as a first forray into external storage, and really can't praise it higher. I use it for all of my Itunes music, and regularly play directly from it with no problems whatsoever. It also acts as a storage device for all of my other media without fault. I'm a little worried about complaints of it stopping, I've got irreplacable data on there. Though I don't run it ALL the time, it's not got anything stored on or next to it, and it seems perfectly happy. Quiet and efficient. Would totally recommend it. Specially now at the price it's at. Just be wary, Formatted it's about 465gb, and it doesn't half fill up quick. I'm in the market for a 1TB jobbie to sit along side it.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Good value for money, easy to set up, very quiet

I bought this as a back-up drive for my son's PC as I've been using a 250GB Freecom desk top drive for some time without problems. It's delivered in FAT32 format, so you might want to reformat as NTFS for PC use. Other than that it's "plug in a go". The HDD is actually a Samsung drive. It's very, very quiet: the PC fan makes more noise than this drive.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Great Drive - PS3 compatible

This is my second Freecom Drive, and yet again, performs as per spec. Runs virtually silent, which is a bit unnerving at first, but operationally, there are no issues.

Some facts you need to know:

Drive size: Not actually 500Gb, but 465GB

PS3 Compatible? Yes! Plug and play via USB. It is best to transfer a file via the PS3 to the hard drive first, as it creates a file folder -

I have not done this the other way round, so come experimentation may be in order.

The key to it working with a PS3 is that you MUST NOT format the drive, no matter how tempted you are to do so - PS3's do not recognise NTFS, you simply use the drive as is when it arrives (in FAT32 format) - only snag is that you cannot partition it in FAT32 (to my knowledge).

A good bit of kit - and great VFM.
