  Very good budget option

This is a very capable little unit and good value considering that others are twice or more for similar features. The transfer speeds are not going to set any records but are enough for normal domestic use, I can for instance stream HD video off one of these with no problems.

  No real problems

I used a Western Digital (WD) Caviar Green WD10EVDS 1TB 3.5" Internal SATA Hard Drive with my DNS-313. I've had no real problems, apart from my impatience. The drive had to be configured using the supplied software on a Windows PC (Mac Users beware) as the web server doesn't start working until the disk is formatted and up and running. (Or at least I couldn't get it to talk via the web server).

  Flaky

Many problems with write / read problems to the 500GB WD disk I installed in this unit. These were much improved but not resolved by a firmware update. The DNS313 also has a poor operator interface which can loose settings (such as all user details). The ftp server stopped working and only came back after a factory re-set. In addition the security model implemented on this device is crude and almost useless.

The last thing you need in a storage device is unreliability and for this reason I suggest you avoid the DNS313.
