Hexi-Stoves are brilliant. Small, and still able to cook boil-in-the-bags and boil water quickly. They're very simple to use with a efficient design that stores the fuel inside the stove securely. Slight downside is the state it leaves your mess tins in, but that's easily removable with warm soapy water - or wetwipes if in the field! Now whilst I would prefer cooking with gas, this is a brilliant solution if you have limited space - ie. in a day sack / webbing; or if you just want the simplicity of the thing.
A few tips for you:
- The hexi tablets can be very awkward to light. Some solutions can be ripping a bit of the cardboard packaging, light that and place on the tablets. Or a very efficient way I've recently discovered. Squirt a bit of the alcoholic hand wash stuff over the tablets, it burns and sets the stove going nicely.
- Make sure there is circulation - The fumes are highly poisonous, so don't use them in confinded rooms.

 Old Skool and still Cool.

Was tidying up my camping gear and found one of these and a hexi refill inside my mess tins recently. I used these when I was younger, introduced to them by my airforce dad. I've used these on the Coast to Coast, Lyke Wake, Pennine Way, and West Highland Way. Prefer these to gas, as they are more compact and more stable, you know exactly how much fuel you have, and can supplement your brewing power with twigs. Yes they can be a bit hard to light, but the hand gel suggestion is pure genius, I used to use alcohol jelly fuel refills, but hand gel is a far better idea, being dual purpose. I also pack a jet flame lighter, as it burns hotter, is more directional, and is less wind prone. Hell, get both. And yes, they do soot up your mess tins, but a quick rub on some wet grass will get the worst off.

Solid fuel stove are great and cheap. They are better at festivals than gas cookers as they will not be stolen no gas to run out and dont blow out once lit. The hints above for lighting I must try. Also try to use a long BBQ lighter as matches get damp and normal lighters get too hot. They are efficient small lightweight and disposable.
