What is Amber?

Amber is a most interesting substance.

It is an organic gem and like pearls it owes its origin to something that was once alive.

Amber is a fossilised tree resin that dates back some 40/50 million years. The resin oozed from sub-tropical conifers smothering everything in their path. Over time these forests were covered by soil and then by the seas, eventually to fossilise into what we call Amber. Much flora and fauna is captured within its golden tomb.

Why buy Amber? Each piece of Amber is unique.

Amber's variation in colour reflects the four seasons and the wearer's mood. Amber has a wonderful texture, which is warm and pleasant to the touch.

Amber, it is claimed, has magical properties; it has been used as an aphrodisiac, as a protection against evil and as a good luck charm.
It is believed that Amber is medically beneficial. Its healing powers have been used to treat asthma, rheumatism and internal problems.

The ancient Greeks believed that Amber should be worn as a protection against disease.

Amber gives out negative ions, which help balance out the positive ions which are all around us in today's society.

Amber is versatile, sophisticated and stylish.

How to care for your Amber

Amber is soft, only slightly harder than talc and should, therefore, be treated with care. To be avoided is contact with hard objects, chemicals such as perfumes and hairspray, excessive heat and light. Amber kept in a soft fabric bag will be protected from scratching and premature ageing. To clean amber, wash it with mild soap and warm water and polish it dry with a soft cloth. The lustre lost from old amber may sometimes be restored by polishing it with a soft cloth saturated with olive oil.
