Dr Merek Vance runs a clinic for the underprivileged in Pittsburgh. Summoned by a colleague, he returns to Blairtown, where he grew up poor, and finds himself sharing a taxi with wealthy Emily Blair, a snobbish rich girl he never liked while growing up together, but she has since contracted meningitis and is deaf. Emily has postponed her wedding to Jeff Stoddard, a member of high society like herself, while leaving town to seek treatment. In her absence, her sister Janice has fallen in love with Jeff, but to protect her they keep their passion hidden. Merek agrees to examine Emily, and embarks on a long course of treatment. But her deafness appears to be incurable. One evening Merek comes across Jeff and Janice embracing, but chooses to say nothing. Instead he confesses to Emily that he has fallen in love with her. Emily responds by discontinuing the treatment, and consenting to marry Jeff. During her wedding preparations she learns that Merek is developing a new serum. She insists on becoming his guinea pig. Reluctantly he agrees.
